Motor vehicles may be considered deadly weapons, just as much as guns. In the wrong hands, their use can lead to severe injuries and even death. When New York drivers fail to adhere to the rules of the road and let themselves become distracted in some way, a minimum one ton vehicle can quickly become a deadly projectile.
Four people in western New York recently found this out the hard way. Police were called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving two vehicles. The state of the wreckage trapped four people. Before any medical assistance could be given to the vehicles’ occupants, emergency personnel had to extricate them.
Once they were free, emergency medical personnel discovered three of them suffered serious injuries. They were transported and, at last report, were still hospitalized. The fourth victim suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
That was the extent of the information initially provided by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. The road was closed for several hours during the rescue efforts, the on scene investigation and clean-up of the accident. No further details regarding the cause of the crash were released at last report.
For now, it is not known who was driving the vehicles and who may have been at fault for the crash. Nevertheless, all of the parties involved, including the family of the deceased victim, may benefit from an understanding of their rights and responsibilities in connection with the accident. Those who suffered severe injuries retain the right to file personal injury claims, while the family of the decedent may file a wrongful death claim. If one or more of the parties is found to be responsible financially, the passengers may be able to recover damages permissible under our state laws.
