Thousands of people each day attempt to hail a cab while they are standing on one of the many streets in New York City. In a large majority of cases, this task goes off without incident. In a recent case, however, an elderly couple attempting to hail a cab was struck by a car that was involved in a two car accident.
The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. and involved a minivan carrying a foreign diplomat and a car. Police, who are continuing to investigate the accident, believe that the car was responsible for initiating the collision. After the collision occurred, the car spun out of control and struck the elderly couple. The woman was thrown into a parked vehicle while her husband became trapped under the car.
Witnesses stated that, after the accident, the woman was telling various people at the crash scene that the man hit was her husband. It is unclear what injuries the woman sustained. However, her 79-year-old husband was later pronounced dead.
No information has been released regarding whether New York police expect to file criminal charges against either of the motorists for their involvement in this car accident. From the information presented thus far, it appears clear that the unfortunate couple, who were merely standing on the side of the road, were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. This tragic chain of events has shown how quickly lives can change and how drastic the results can be for a couple who, through no apparent fault of their own, suffered injury and death. It remains to be seen if personal injury and/or wrongful death lawsuits will result, based on claims of negligence by one or both drivers.
