A 36-year-old woman was arrested following a serious crash that left a man dead. Suffolk County police arrested the woman, who has been charged with drunk driving in connection with the car accident that occurred just after midnight on March 13 . If she is found guilty in a New York criminal court, she will face serious penalties.
According to the accident report, a 59-year-old man was driving southbound on Route 25A when the accident occurred. The vehicle driven by the 36-year-old woman apparently crossed the center line while traveling in the opposite direction. A head-on collision resulted, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
The man was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was later declared dead as a result of the injuries he suffered in the accident. The woman was taken to a different local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not disclosed to the public by police sources. She is currently charged with drunk driving, though additional charges could be forthcoming as a result of the fatal accident. At her arraignment hearing, her bail was set at $150,000.
If she is found guilty of drunk driving, the woman will likely face jail time in connection with the fatality caused in this car accident. Sadly, such accidents are often preventable by simply resisting any temptation to drink and drive. With this in mind, the family of the deceased driver is entitled under New York law to pursue civil claims against the driver in the form of a wrongful death lawsuit, based upon proof of negligence that is found to have caused or materially contributed to the fatal crash.
